PRESS RELEASE: September 1, 2007

Ballpark Dreams Showcase at AFA Fall Championships

High school softball players from the western United States will showcase their skills in front of college coaches and scouts in an attempt to reach the 2008 Ballpark Dreams National Softball Showcase in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Ballpark Dreams Nevada Softball Showcase, which precedes the American Fastpitch Association Fall Championships, is one of a series of softball showcases across the United States that provides players with an opportunity to be seen by college coaches and scouts while receiving an evaluation of their talent.

The Nevada Showcase is Friday, November 16, at 1:00 PM, at Pioneer Park in Mesquite, Nevada.

Described as an athletic job application or athletic college entrance exam, the showcase not only gives players a chance to demonstrate their talents, it gives them a chance to see how they compare to other players their age.  It also gives the college coaches a chance to stay ahead in the recruiting game by seeing young players.

“We are looking for the very best players across the country,” commented Ronald Vrana, the director of Ballpark Dreams Showcases.  “There is plenty of talent out there that is not getting noticed, and we want to give these players a chanced to be seen by the college coaches and scouts.”

The showcase is presented locally by National Scouting Report, America’s premier scouting service since launching the industry in 1980.

“National Scouting Report will promote the showcase and provides the participant results and evaluations to every college softball coach in the country,” commented Mike Hinds, the area director for National Scouting Report in Utah and Nevada.

Professional scouts and college coaches will evaluate players for running speed, and position players are evaluated on arm strength, accuracy and fielding technique. Pitchers throw against a radar gun and are evaluated on their delivery mechanics.

“We use professional scouts who are most likely seeing these players for the first time,” explained Vrana.  “This allows us to give an unbiased evaluation based on how the athlete performs that day.”

The college coaches and scouts will then select a group of players to play in a simulated game.  Coaches also watch how the athletes carry themselves and the attitude that they display when given direction.

“Players will be allowed to show their talents at as many positions as they would like,” Vrana added.  “Players often think they are better at one position, but the scouts see them fitting well at another position.
